Workshop Review - Colour, Sound and Crystals by Shonagh Moore:
Saturday 16th May 2009.
I have attended many exceptional workshops and study days at Greenhill New Church in Barnet. Once again, the Swedenborgians have chosen excellent subject matter for a day of spiritual nourishment and enjoyment, this time in conjunction with The Lynwood Fellowship, a North London based charity that facilitates seminars and trains healers.
Shonagh Moore is one of the longest serving members of this Fellowship and as our facilitator for the day, delighted 25 attenders to beautiful meditative musical sounds and harmonies. Shonagh originally qualified as a commercial artist with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communication but she now possesses ten crystal singing bowls which have inspired her innovative work with sound energy.
I was very amazed by the size of the largest bowls which provide a deep, expansive sound. These laboratory created bowls come in diameter sizes of between 6” to 24” and are made of pure crushed silica quartz which have been digitally tested to produce a pure tone. Shonagh’s four largest bowls are frosted white in colour and the smaller bowls are transparent. She has ten bowls, seven that ally themselves with the seven colours of the rainbow and the chakra areas of the body and another three of a more unusual vibratory sound. Shonagh plays the bowls using a rubber or suede grip around the edge (in typical singing bowl style) to set up a long hum. The effect created is a beautiful chime, like that of a bell, but with an extended reverberation that lasts until one finds oneself listening to an endless silence. The sound is said to permeate the physical body, balancing and harmonising the energies within it. Certainly many attenders reported feeling the music within their physical body and I found the purity and resonance of the sound very centring. Many attenders reported seeing wonderful colours in their mind’s eye or being reminded of wonderful places of rest and recuperation, such as being by the sea or in a beautiful landscape. Working with singing bowls is thought to be transformative and they have been used in music therapy and to aid relaxation and meditation.
In the morning session, we heard all singing bowls played, down the scale and up again. Shnagh gave each person a channelled message about how their character is reflected in their choice of favourite sounds. In the afternoon, we heard the crystals played again and worked with colour to reproduce our experience of the sound on paper. Shonagh introduced us to chants of the violet flame of St Germain which brings freedom. Saint Germain was a master violinist, traveller, linguist and philosopher/writer.
Shonagh likes to work organically and learns old-style, that is ‘on the job’. She learns from others and she gives wisdom to others, it’s a ‘two way process’ that grows and changes and has been developing over 25 years of working with her Spirit guides and helpers. Shonagh drew our attention to the native American Hopi tribe healers who carried a small quartz bowl and were know as the Rainbow Keepers. Other native American tribes used the drum as a healing instrument. They noticed that when they drummed closely around an unwell person, in the region of the cause of the illness, the drum note would play a flat sound. Shonagh believes that thought has a resonance and a power to create changes in our world. The more we think about something, the more power we give to it to change our life for the better or worse. By using the singing bowls, we cleanse and energise ourselves, meditation on beautiful and harmonious thoughts, thereby bringing health to our mind and body.
