Colour therapy for chakra balance - An Article By Tylluan.

It is believed by Colour therapists (or Chromatherapists) that the seven colours of the rainbow relate to the body's seven main chakras. So if you find you are drawn to a particular colour it could be that one of your chakras is in need of your attention.

What is Colour therapy?

Each colour has a different wavelength and light moves in waves of varying lengths, each being sensed individually. Colour therapists believe that different colours correspond with the inner vibrations of the body. They believe that using colour as a treatment if can rebalance and harmonise any out of sync vibrations.

Whilst there are many energy centres – or chakras – it is widely believed that there are seven main chakras.

Violet The CROWN
Indigo The BROW
Blue The THROAT
Green The HEART
Yellow The SOLAR PLEXUS
Orange The SACRAL
Red The BASE

It’s no huge surprise that colours have such a profound affect on our well being. We’ve all heard the phrases ‘Green with Envy’, ‘The Red mist’, ‘Feeling Blue’. US scientist Robert Gerard conducted a study in 1958 that stated red stimulates us but also makes us anxious, while blue promotes calm. He showed that colour can affect our appetite, blood pressure and aggression. Famously Prisons in Texas dressed inmates in pink. Whilst this was partly to humiliate them, it is also said that pink reduces aggression.

Colour therapy isn’t a newage notion. There are scrolls and texts suggesting many cultures and countries from the ancient Egyptians to the ancient Chinese used and recorded colour therapies.

Bringing Colour therapy to your life.

There are many benefits in seeking a qualified Colour Therapist session. However you can also bring colour therapy to your own home. The below colours introduced through accessories in your home will help provide a full sense of wellbeing. Just remember everything in moderation is more beneficial than drowning your home in colour:

Violet - Balances the mind and helps transform obsessions and fears. Violet brings peace, and helps us combat fear. Violet has the shortest wavelength of all the colours and is associated with artistic and musical ability, stimulating creativity, inspiration, sensitivity, spirituality and compassion. Violet is very introvert, causing us to look within ourselves, encouraging contemplation and meditation. However, too much violet can cause too much introspection. Violet is said to be very beneficial for psychological disorders, and all disorders relating to the nervous system. It helps promote inspiration, imagination, empathy, self-respect, dignity, spirituality, intuition, clarity, and confidence.

Indigo - stimulates intuition and imagination, and is a strong sedative. It's the colour of divine knowledge and the higher mind. Indigo is said to be a powerful anaesthetic and can reduce pain. Suitable for quiet places and bedrooms, private retreats. Possibly in a study.

Blue - Calming, relaxing, soothing, cooling. Midnight blue has a strong sedative effect, allowing us to connect to our intuitive and feminine side. However, too much dark blue can be depressing. Blue affects our minds rather than our bodies. It helps promotes a sense of calm, peace, relaxation, steadying, self-expression, intuition, honesty, truth, cleansing, soothing.
Good for: headaches, period pains, insomnia. Stress, anxiety, obsessions, learning difficulties.

Green – Has the strongest association with nature. It helps us connect to others and to the natural world. It gives a feeling of comfort, relaxation, calmness and space. It helps reduce stress and is a powerful healing colour. It promotes balance, personal development, self-acceptance and compassion for others. It is good to combat stress, fear and self-pitying. It is good for physical health problems, nausea, heart problems, blood pressure problems, immune system issues, fatigue, headaches and flu symptoms.

Yellow - A happy, bright and uplifting colour. It stimulates the mind, intellect, emotions, and contributes to the expression of thought aiding memory, clear thinking, decision making and good judgement. It builds self-confidence and encourages optimism, however, too much yellow can cause loss of self-esteem and self-confidence. It promotes: self-confidence and respect, will-power, self-control, intellectual and mental stimulation, flexible thinking, contentment, empowerment
Good for indigestion, depression, sensitivity to criticism, stress, negativity, difficulty in thinking clearly

Orange - A joyous colour. It releases emotions, feelings of self-pity, lack of self-worth and unwillingness to forgive. It stimulates the mind and promotes a renewed interest in life. It is a natural anti-depressant and lifts the spirit.
A fun & sociable colour of independence and happiness. Orange is thought to bring about changes in the biochemical structure, and can help fight depression. It promotes: vitality, stimulation, self-esteem, independence, inner strength, optimism, creativity, self-expression, happiness, broadens and opens up the mind to new ideas and perspectives, understanding
Good for: depression, low self-esteem, bereavement, sexual problems

Red - is powerful, energy-filled colour, associated with life and vitality. Red relates to the physical body, it stimulates us and raises the heart rate. It has the longest wavelength and slowest vibration of all the colours. It stimulates the body (including circulation, intestine and appetite) and promotes a sense of lively, energising, happiness.
Good for depression & negativity, initiative and motivation.

Finally, in addition to bringing colour to your home you can also eat your way to balance. Try to eat a rainbow of colour when you prepare your meals. A side salad is perfect for this with the huge abundance of coloured fruit and vegetables.
