The Palawan people of the phillipines call the creator of worlds the weaver who looks after them along with the help of lesser deities. The palawan relate to them and their ancestors through shamanistic methods as the shaman travels through the worlds. The Tinguian, who might have come to their land when some of the malay peoples had left east asia into the pacific, the tinguian feel that spirit{Sasailo}live in the surrounding nature and also move freely amidst those on this side. The Tinguians have mediums who communicate with the Sasailo {some of which still prefer the earthly.
Near the tinguain live the Negrito peoples of mount pinatubo who have the belief that their ancestors came to the area around 23000 years ago.Seems likely since peoples similar to the negrito might have been the first sapians or modern humans to have entered the pacific basin----- and the ainu may have been very early too.Does looking into any of these peoples tell us how old shamanism is as early peoples moved eastwards.Would like to know a little more about the relationship between
shamanistic and mediumistic.
I like this possible neat relationship between, creator, shaman and spirit contact.
In Palawan cosmogony Ampu, the Master, wove the world and created several kinds of humanity, hence he is also called Nagsalad, the Weaver. He is the supreme deity in a system of religious thought that can be qualified as "theist" and "animist." He is a protective watching presence, always invisible to tawbanar or the real people. In the verticality of the universe, andunawan represents his abode. While people live on dunya or earth, another benevolent and protective deity stays in lalangaw, the median space. This is Diwata, a mediator between humans and Ampu. Since this world is made up of a vertical succession of realms, conceived of as a series of plates, there are other invisible humanities beings, and deities. However, the pantheon is not organized in a fixed pyramidal order. The langgam, also called saytan, are ambiguous beings who can be harmful to humans as taw mara-at or "evil-doers," but who can also be taw manunga or " good-doers," benevolent bringers of inspiration and knowledge.
Ulit designates the voyage of the soul of a shaman, a major religious experience. It is related to the cosmogonic mythology, and to the vertical succession of realms inhabited by good-oriented or ill-oriented people with whom he has to negotiate.
The Negrito are an animist group. They believe in nature spirits - good and bad, who dwell in trees, rocks and mountains. They also believe in good and malevolent deities. Spirits are feared and avoided. When favorable things happen, they feel indebted or obliged to feel grateful. Various rituals and ceremonies are performed to maintain links between them and the world of spirits or gods. The Babaylan functions as both medium and shaman.
Can t help but wonder if there is different ways of looking at spirit between the Nigrito and other peoples from early settlers.
I cannot help but wonder how in what way the Toba eruption is related to early peoples coming into the pacific and also how this relates to early shamanism.
It is currently not known where human populations were living at the time of the eruption. The most plausible scenario is that all the survivors were populations living in Africa although other humans may have existed elsewhere.
Recent analyses of mitochondrial DNA have set the estimate for the major migration from Africa from 60,000–70,000 years ago, around 10–20,000 years earlier than previously thought, and in line with dating of the Toba eruption to around 66,000–76,000 years ago. During the subsequent tens of thousands of years, the descendants of these migrants populated Australia, East Asia, Europe, and finally the Americas.
Therefore I got to wonder about early human populations coming into the pacific after the toba eruption having a early type of shamanism but could it have been a shamanism that shared religious space with ancestor spirit,a form of mediumship, animal spirits, local nature spirits of many kinds and an creator who created all realities both physical and spiritual.
