This book Hymns To an Unknown God - Awakening the Spirit in Everyday Life by Sam Keen was written in 1999 and when I read it 20 years ago, it made a big impact on me, so I kept it on my bookshelf. Re-reading it, I wonder what happened to the questing frame of mind it gave me all those years ago! It is a book for today - 2021 hitting the nail on the head on every page!
The content is still fresh and hasn’t dated. Sam Keen must be 90 years old now, having had an extraordinary life as a magazine editor, he took to the high wire as a trapeze artist, has written many extraordinary books, and has been a spiritual seeker par excellence since the 1960s.
The journey that Sam takes us on is a spiral one, and one that causes shivers down my spine and brings tears to my eyes with wonder. His biographical philosophy allows me to see the gnarls of his spirit and encourages me to ‘cherish the grain of my own wood’!
Every page is a masterpiece of wisdom that touches deep into my soul with its magical poetry and deep understanding of what it means to be human. He re-collects the fragments of my soul without trying to give definitive answers to unanswerable questions, he provides a refresher course on all I knew and have forgotten, and he kindles new knowledge of things that we should be speaking to each other about that can never be fully known but should never be forgotten. This is a powerhouse of spiritual bliss. A veritable road map up the mountain of life for authentic spiritual seekers. Sam Keen is king; Scott Peck and Carl Rogers are also rans in this holy grail genre!
“Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden, cleanse the thoughts of my heart by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that I may more perfectly love thee.”
